Family Photo Session Prep Guide

You've just booked your photo session with Nicole Harkey Photography, and we're both super excited! But you might be wondering, "What do I do now?" This guide will walk you through everything you need to prepare your family for our photography session, from wardrobe choices to getting the kids (and dad) ready. I'm thrilled to work with you and your family. If you have any questions along the way, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help!

Things To Do Before Your Session

  • Beauty Appointments: Schedule hair, nail, and makeup appointments before your photoshoot. Ensure your roots are touched up and avoid chipped nail polish.
  • Outfit Planning: Plan your outfits at least a week in advance. Don't wait until the last minute! I know it can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to plan outfits especially if you have small children and maybe coordinating colors or patterns is not your strong suit. That's what I'm here for, feel free to text me photos of your wardrobe if you need help choosing or even if you need ideas/inspiration.
  • Prepare Your Kids: Introduce the session as a fun activity. Say things like, "We'll be hanging out with our friend [Nicole Harkey] on Saturday!" to keep it lighthearted. I also promise to make our session a fun and stress free time for everyone (you included)
  • Props and Special Requests: Think about any props or specific types of images you want. Let me know in advance if you have preferences.
  • Rest and Nutrition: Ensure everyone gets a good night's sleep and eats well beforehand.

How To Dress For Your Session

  • Dress for the Weather: Comfort is key, ESPECIALLY here in the Arizona heat. Take a look at what the weather will be like on the day of our session to make sure you are prepared and have the right clothes to keep the kiddos happy (and cool during warm weather/warm in the chilly weather).
  • Complementary Colors: Avoid "matchy-matchy" outfits. Choose a complementary color palette, such as earth tones and neutrals - again this is where I am happy to help, just reach out.
  • Avoid Logos and Text: No shirts with writing, no baseball caps, remove sunglasses.
  • Undergarments: Choose clothes that properly cover your undergarments.
  • Dress Suggestions: Women and little girls may want to opt for medium or long dresses for more flattering and dynamic photos. This is JUST a suggestion and in no way meant to sound mandatory. Who doesn't like twirling in a dress though? They make for some great photos.
  • Empty Pockets: Gentlemen should remove bulky items like phones and keys from their pockets. Women don't forget to remove that hair tie you never leave the house without.

What To Bring To Your Photo Session

  • Personal Touch-Up Items: Lipstick, hairbrush, etc.
  • Snacks: Bring non-messy snacks and treats for kids, but keep them hidden until needed or use as incentive to get them to smile and reward for after the session (see my other guide on How To Make Your Kids Smile).
  • Walkable Shoes: We might walk on unpaved trails, so bring walkable shoes that you can easily change in and out of.
  • Change of Clothes: Bring extra clothes for kids in case they get dirty. A towel might also be handy. I ALWAYS bring a wagon and a changing pop up tent so feel free to bring all of your items you may need and we can haul them along with us in the wagon.
  • Relaxation Items: A beer for the adults (if that helps them relax)! Bring a stroller if you have a baby as they might get fussy and you'll also have a place to park them so we can get some good mom and dad photos together :).

How To Pose During Your Photo Session

  • Natural Interactions: No need to force smiles. Aim for authentic expressions. We will get the "Christmas Card" posed photos out of the way and then we will let the kids have fun and get some natural interactions.
  • Play and Interact: Laugh, play, tickle, and snuggle to capture real moments.
  • Camera Shyness: Not everyone needs to look at the camera. Encourage natural interactions instead.
  • Family Focus: When in doubt, smile and look at your family lovingly.
  • Stay Close: Stand close together for a more intimate feel. I always start every session by telling my families that I have 1 rule - your hands should always be touching something, either the person next to you or on your own clothing. Of course I will help with that as well, I know the phrase "what do I do with my hands" very well.
  • Relax: Don’t stress about making everything perfect. Be present, and I'll handle the rest.

What To Expect After Your Photo Session

  • Relax: Your work is mostly done. Now, you can unwind.
  • Photo Selection: I will sort through the photos and deliver a gallery within two weeks.
  • Proofing Gallery: Depending on your package, you'll receive a proofing gallery to select your favorite images or upgrade your package.
  • Display Ideas: Look online for ideas on how to display your photos then measure for placement. You can order prints, framed photos, and canvases from your online gallery.
  • Enjoy Your Photos: Appreciate your printed art every day. I can't wait to help you create something beautiful and meaningful for your family.

And that's it! This complete checklist will guide you through your family photography session. Thank you for choosing me as your trusted photographer. I look forward to capturing beautiful artwork for your family to cherish for decades.
